GPSmap 740s with GPS19x-NMEA2000 help needed

Dear all

I have a GPSmap 740s and a NMEA2000 bus which I have setup. Now the problem is that the Plotter is not using the signal from the GPS19x-NMEA2000. The Plotter is installed inside a steel ship ans has therefore no GPS reciption.
Does anybody knows how to fix that problem?
Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Matthias

I hate to say it, but pretty sure you can only choose the internal GPS for navigation on the 740s. You can get a GA38 which will give you an external antenna.

Hi Opie91

I hope this is a joke, if this is true that would be pretty embaracing for Garmin in my opinion. The Bus is most probably set up right because the GPS signal is used and taken from the AIS, Radio and GMI10 as well.

Regards,
Matthias

No joke. I would have liked the 10 hz gps also, but no dice.

The 740s is not on the GPX19x compatibility list.

I have a 740xs that works with an external garmin GPS. In fact, the 19.

It does NOT work with my Airmar weather station GPS.

You should try updating the firmware... that may help. Does the 19 even show up on your list of hardware?

Do you mean a 741xs? Garmin does not make a 740xs.

If it is a 741xs then it is compatable with the GPX19x, but the 740s is not.

Re: GPSmap 740s with GPS19x-NMEA2000 help needed

Dear all

I got now the confirmation from Garmin that the NMEA2000 GPS is not compatible and I have to buy a BNC GPS Antena. However I am pretty dissatisfied with Garmin since this would be only a matter of Software.
The BNC Antenna is quite cheap however know I need 2 Antennes which do the same....
Thanks for your support.

Regards,
Matthias

I feel your pain as a fellow 740s owner. Garmin will likely never update the 740s software to accept the NMEA2000 GPS for marketing purposes. They would much rather you purchase a new 741xs.......

Re: GPSmap 740s with GPS19x-NMEA2000 help needed

Yes it seems like this. We have purchased now the BNC Antenna and are waiting in a French harbour until they will arrive. I hope at least that the work fast...
However for me it is not understandable why the updated was not done. If I have to make a decision again when I change the electronic I will keep that in mind. Even if you buy now the newest model it seems to be Garmins strategy to provide updates as short as possible and this should be considered if you spend several thousends $/EUR or what ever...

Regards,
Matthias

This is not a unique problem to Garmin, all manufactures do it. Garmin just seems to do it best.
