GPS Sharing

I would like to understand if is possible to have several programs working at the same time sharing one GPS.
I connected the Furuno GP-32 to the Pc using a Serial to USB, works fine but to have the gps on one program I have to disable it from the other.
Thank you for your suggestions!!
R.

I'm no geek, quite the reverse but when I first bought a BU353 GPS puck and installed OpenCPN, Seaclear and another commercial program I had been given, I did manage to get them all running from the one Bu353 GPs by using a fee to download port splitting program I lost that laptop with a major screwup it was all on so only have memory now to go on. It was running Vista and the freebie port splitter was easy to use. My current laptop has Win8.1 and i don't know if a port splitter is available.

IIRC you used the portsplitter program to identify which port was getting the gPS data, then used the same program to duplicate that to another port number, then told the nav software, in it's settings,to look for that duplicate port for data.

No doubt someone cleverer than me will pop up soon with better info...

Re: GPS Sharing

You can use OpenCPN to create an NMEA server. This will allow you to share the GPS with any other devices on the network or on the same computer.

Re: GPS Sharing

Here are the instructions.

Start with the OpenCPN configured for your Serial Puck.

You will need to write down this number as the other software will require it when setting up a network connection. OpenCPN must be running for the other software to access the GPS device.

Re: GPS Sharing

if you wanted to do it with hardware. I guess you could buy a few serial to usb converters. slpit he nmea 183 data to each. then each program would have it's own com port for gps.
