GPS not showing up on chart plotter

The boat has a Raymarine E120 chartplotter and GPS with its antenna mounted on the stern rail.

The plotter is not able to "find" the location of the vessel, ie., the GPS is not "talking" with the plotter.

How might I trouble-shoot this problem, please?

Re: GPS not showing up on chart plotter

Two possibilities strike me as most likely. 1. a bad connection. Trace wires and break, clean, and make them all. The other is the battery in the GPS may have failed. If your chartplotter is a classic E then you are likely in the time frame for that. Replace the GPS unless you are really good with solder and SMD.

S/V Auspicious,

Is there, in fact, a battery on a hard-wired GPS with the antenna mounted on the stern rail?

Thanks,

S/V Acadia

Yep. If you open up the GPS antenna there is a small button battery soldered (*sigh*) to the receiver board. That is supposed to keep data in the memory of the GPS for faster locks when you turn it back on. Unfortunately, when that battery fails other things go with it, including getting a lock at all.

Replacing the battery requires finding (being) someone who can deal with surface mount devices. I can do it. I don't recommend it. It's cheaper to buy a new GPS. You may find you need to deal with NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2k (or Seatalk 1 to Seatalk ng) protocol conversion. Not hard, but a little more money.

Thank you. If I understand correctly, since the Raymarine E180 is not a NMEA2000 system, then I would need to get a new GPS with a converstion from NMEA 0183 tio Seatalk. Is that correct?

Do you have any suggestions on how to find such a device?

It's easier than that. The latest Raymarine GPS puts out Seatalk ng. There is a bus (two blue, two white, and a yellow). Terminators in the two blues, plug the new GPS into a white, and run the yellow to your E120 0183 input. It isn't horrible, just more parts than you would like. *sigh* All the wiring is in the appendices in the back of the manual. If you're in the Chesapeake I can do it for you. ($) You're going to want white and pink crimps.
