It may be that the former owner never updated the software
to account for the new/up-dated GPS
signal data being transmitted (I had this problem with a 162 some while ago). A software
up-date can be obtained at no cost on the Garmin site and loaded to the device if the data side of the power/data cable has a lap-top connection; or, if you inherited the AC converter and power/data-cable set that came with the unit when new from the former owner. To determine whether this is an alternative, when starting the unit, see if you can go into "simulate GPS" mode. If so, the unit is okay and the software up-date will likely work. The 172 was a good unit.
