Garmin g2 Vision + Active Captain + Garmin Express = No luck.

Hi,

I have an older Garmin 4212. I am trying to use the new Active Captain (horrible app)... When I take the SD out of my 4212 and put it in my laptop (the only way to tell Express that you have a map on the older units)... it sees the 4212 but doesn't show the map.

Thoughts?

I had the exact same thing happen to me - turned out that the SD card was “pre-owned”. Charts can be used on any MFD, but only the original card buyer can use the other features, including Garmin Express, Activecaptain, etc.

Contact Garmin support. There is a file written to the SD card by the chart plotter when the SD card is inserted. If the file exists before you register the SD card with Garmin Express it will not be recognized by Active Captain app. The file must be deleted from the SD card and registered with the Garmin Express app before installing the SD card in the chart plotter.

I can't remember the file name right now, but as soon as I deleted the file I was able to load the charts on Active Captain app.

Re: Garmin g2 Vision + Active Captain + Garmin Express = No luck.

I bought a Garmin 545s before I left Seattle to world cruise. I bought 900.00 worth of charts to cover everythin from South America to Australia. I asked the superviser of sales on the phone if these charts had all recent updates. She became indignant. By the time I got to French Polynesia the G2 Blue charts were not accurate at all. They got worse as I went west. Things so bad as showing places covered by four fathoms of water at low tide. This was Beverage Reef which is quite frankly a REEF!!! I had to stop cruising and arriving anywhere after dark even wide open channels because their charts were so far off. In Tonga I bought a cheep Android tablet with GPS and loaded the Navionics charts on it. I litterally gave all my Garmin SD’s away as I couldn’t in good conscience sell them.In places like Fiji the only accurate charting is Open CPN with the Google overlay. I am a retired Offshore tug captain. This is important information for those buying a chart plotter to go offshore with. I will say the Garmin charts were accurate in the States but not Mexico. Cheers and beware....

I almost feel like starting a thread, Garmin Horror Stories, I'd start with mine, but no, just the thought of it puts me in a foul mood.

I am still fuming. So it's Navionics for me.
