Garmin 76 Question

I recently purchased a used Garmin 76 to replace the one I had that had died. It works just fine except for the date. It tells me that it is 5/20/96 (oh how I wish I could turn back the clock, but alas that can't be done). The instruction booklet tells me that there is no way for the operator to do anything about the date. The time is correct for May on the East coast, where I am, but one hour off for winter.

Thoughts?

Thank you in advance for your input.

Capt Ron...ahrrr Matie; there be treasure out there!

Re: GARMIN 76 QUESTION

Double click MENU to enter menu
Move cursor to SETUP and click Enter
Cursor down to TIME and click ENTER
Change time zone settings.

That's for my Garmin 76 CX

Re: GARMIN 76 QUESTION

Most likely the internal battery is dead and the date change won't stay in memory when turned off.

Re: GARMIN 76 QUESTION

Do a master reset:
  1. Power the device off
  2. Press and hold Menu
  3. Power the device on while continuing to hold Menu
  4. Release all buttons once the "Do you really want to erase all userdata?" message appears
  5. Select Yes
When the initialization options menu comes up, select "stored w/o batteries". You may need to leave the device outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite data.

Re: Garmin 76 Question

You could try this advice from http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={dedcdb80-1625-11dd-dc9c-000000000000}:

To perform an AutoLocate on a GPS 72, GPS 72H, GPS 76, or GPS 76s, please follow these instructions:
  1. With the device powered off, press and hold the Page button
  2. While holding the Page button, press and hold the Power button
  3. Continue to hold both buttons until the Satellite page appears, then release both buttons
  4. Leave the device in clear view of the sky for 20-30 minutes to acquire the satellites
    1. If the device acquires satellites faster than 20-30 minutes, you do not have to leave it in clear view of the sky any longer
To perform an AutoLocate on a GPSMAP 76c, 76cx, 76cs, or 76csx, please follow these instructions:
  1. With the device powered off, press and hold the Zoom Out button
  2. While holding the Zoom Out button, press and hold the Power button
Once the device has acquired the new satellite information, the time and date should be corrected.

Re: Garmin 76 Question

You may be still in DEMO mode. Check this out.

Date and time are always off in demo.

Data and time remain OK as long as batts are in. They may flip when you swap the AA batts though.

I am not sure there is an internal batt too - I tried to open one and found it hard to open (glued?)

I tried everything mentioned in the thread and the date stays the same. The Clock is correct for Eastern Time, not Daylight savings time, but no change in the date from day to day.

If master reset didn't help, I guess it's broken. Hope you didn't pay much for it. If you got it on fleabay you might have a case for getting your money back.

Re: Garmin 76 Question

Maybe you need to update your software. I think the current version is 4.0. You can check it with the 'system info' function off the main menu. I had to update when I bought my unit used. If all else fails call the Garmin Service Team. Maybe they can help you. You will need the serial number of your unit.

I agree, it is possible the software got corrupted somehow and reloading it could help. You'll need a serial interface cable for your GPSMAP 76 and the Garmin WebUpdater app installed on your PC.

Re: Garmin 76 Question

Got it right!

With help from the Garmin tech desk, my 76 is now reflecting the correct date and time. But I needed to be aboard to get it done as there were more then a few buttons to push. Having the tech support man on speaker phone made the process understandable.

But thank you all for your thoughts. I hope that I can reciprocate on an issue where I have some knowledge.

Regards,
Captain Ron ;-)
