Garmin 540s

I have an opportunity to upgrade my Magellen to an Garmin 540s.

What are your thoughts on this plotter? I know they are selling the 541s now and the 540 has been discontinued.

Is this a good unit (compared to the other models) and what would be a good price for a used unit (with harness).

I have checked the garmin site for features, and have used this unit when i delivered the boat from Tampa to NC. so I know pretty well how it works.

WHat is it worth used?

Here's a fairly comprehensive user review:

The Garmin 540s, an independent unbiased review

No based on a lot of experience, but I have a strong preference in general for Garmin vs. Magellan.

Only one sold on Ebay recently, for $390, with a slightly negative description. There were 27 bidders. I would expect a more favorable description to have netted more than $400. Another sold for $510 with a GXM31 (XM audio) antenna, 3 bidders. $250 for a good 541 is highway robbery. $350 is low.

We have the 555s which is the UK version with sounder. Superb piece of kit and displays AIS much better than the NASA stand alone unit. We also have a C80 on board, but the menus are much easier on the Garmin.

Very pleased with it, and more than happy to recommend this to a friend.
