Garmin 140 Fishfinder / sonar unit

I have a Garmin 140 Fishfinder / sonar unit. At times it ‘locks’ up, on the same depth. You can turn it off and on, and most times that gets it going again. But it’s a bit of a worry because sometimes it is not obvious that it has locked up. Any ideas about what’s wrong. Any suggestions about what I should do.

Sounds like you might have a flaky main board. Unfortunately these units are basically considered throw away if they fail. If they are still available, the price is under $100. Considering the cost of having a tech fix it, you might consider a new unit unless it is still under a warrantee.

It is all built in so I can't see connections. Do you know if I can leave transponder I'm place and unplug old main unit, and plug in new? For that matter can another brand main unit be installed? Cheers

You can use another if the transducer requirements are the same. Most common are the 200khz,and 50khz. Some Garmin units are dual having two transducers in one head. The other problem unless you have some ability in that region is the plug. Garmin have their own which fits certain models not all.
