Fuel Tank Sending Unit.

I have a steel fuel tank (gasoline ) that was not set up for a sending unit. Without punching a hole in the tank is there any unit that could be added my only access is a one inch IPS female in the top of the tank. Does anyone know of a unit that can be installed? I'm hooking up a flow meter to at least have a clue, but I want to know what's in my tank not guess.

Thanks it is pricey as you said but if it's compatable with gasoline it might just do the trick. I sent the munufacturer an email to see if it will do gas, they list diesel, but I'm concerned the fumes from gas may be problematic.

Not compatable with gasoline. At least officially. What I got from hart systems was concern about a damaged plastic tube causing syphoning.

I looked for same for several yrs-no luck.
This is as close as I got.Liquid Sensors - Marine Diesel, Fuel, or Water Level Sensor

Would req. 1" nipple & 1" x 1-1/2" red. coupling. to adapt & not sure if sender float would go thru your 1" tank hole.
I ended up drilling for std 5 hole sender in my diesel tank,but yours is gas.
Can be done by filling tank with CO2 or water first.

There is a type of liquid level sensor that uses air pressure to measure liquid level in a tank. I don't remember the name or anything more, but a web search might find it. I would think it would work with gasoline because the liquid only comes in contact with a tube.

Thanks deblin I came to same conclusions but I don't want to pull tank to punch it .po had just replaced it before I bought it I can't believe someone would not make some provision but I guess not.
Rwidman thanks that's the one above manufacturer says no go on gas because plastic tube is to bottom of tank and could syphon if damaged

Got it. I wonder why they wouldn't use a metal tube or have one for an option.

There are also ultrasonic sensors that measure the distance from the top of the fluid to the sensor. You might look into that.

I thought about sight tubes but that would probably not be safe with gasoline.

Bummer on the tank tender.

A few years ago someone was selling a thin cylindrical unit at boat show">Annapolis boat show.

IIFC it was using LEDs and light detectors. File interrupted the light beam.

Not a clue who they were of if they are still around.

Optical fuel sensors are usually single point devices, used for low fuel warning light etc.

Even just a reliable low fuel warning would be nice. With no spare and no sail running dry is no good. I don't want to carry a spare can. because there is no safe place for it the second tank is decommissioned for I don't know what reason. it's buried under the settee so pulling and inspecting or replacing is a bear.
