Flickering Raymarine ST60 backlight

Hi together!

I have one more question about the ST60 instruments on my just purchased (used) boat:
At night, when the backlight is on, this keeps flickering. The light goes off for some milliseconds and comes back again. This happens in irregular intervals, may be once a second or so.
The former owner of the boat said he thinks this is due to the pump motor which is driven by the Raymarine system and consumes quite some power. So each time the pump goes on the voltage goes down (because the supply line from the battery is quite long) and the light goes off. If so there must be some capacitance broken or so? Even though a second supply cable has been installed he said, the problem did not disappear.

Has somebody experience with this effect? What is the root cause?

Ulf

I cannot think of what pump would be coming on every second, but disconect the pump and see if they still flicker.
My guess is there is a bad connection somewhere in the st60 power sytem. The power supply or the Raymarine system is daisy chained from one instrument to the other so there is a lot of conections, and so a lot of potential for these kind of problems.

Do they all flicker?

Yes, they all flicker!
The former owner said the hydraulic pump would kick in any time the rudder angle needs to get corrected and that creates spikes in the power consumption.
I could not verify this up to now.

That suggests the bad connection is near where the 12v is injected into the system. Raymarine supply chocolate block connectors for this and it's not unusual for the join to be poor.
Also check there is not more instruments daisy chained together than is recommended. More than a certain number (5 from memory) requires 12v at both ends of the daisy chain.
