External alarm buzzer for Matsutec AIS HP-528A

Hello

I have one of these. I've seen on forum there are a few people who uses HP-33A version.

I wonder how can I connect an external buzzer. It says on box and in the manual that it has audible alarms and "External Alarm output port" but there is no hint about connecting one. I've tried talking with UK seller with no luck.

If you have a different model, maybe ONDA or another brand name they are using, and you've fitted such a buzzer please share, maybe it's the same connection.

Thanks,
Gheorghe

Re: External alarm buzzer for Matsutec AIS HP-528A

Thanks for your answer!
I've noticed the same in HP33A manual and I had inquired them:
Quote:
It is not same . The HP-33A have driver , HP-528A need add a relay , it just output alarm signal .
I've measured pins 9&10 but without luck, there's no output there at all (no voltage).
Since I don't have any reply from Matsutec I'll try to measure all of the pins during an alarm, maybe I'll figure it out. The internal buzzer is too weak to be of any use.

Could be switched to ground. Or a dry contact. You need to measure a few things. Not just for power.

The more ideas to check, the better the outcome
I'll have some time on water near the end of May.

GHRT: According to the factory you cannot directly connect a external buzzer to the internal one, you'll overload the circuit, unlike the 33A, which has a (driver) power-up circuit behind it

Try this
Buy a https://www.ebay.com/itm/183427796037

Use hot melt glue to mount it near the internal buzzer,( (You'll need access to the pot meter for adjusting volume) drill a small hole in the back , bring out the 3 wires.(seal the hole after)
The 5V supply needed, comes from a 12v to USB converter
Connect + & - to 5 v and connect - & out to the pos & neg of a 5v external buzzer. Or better you can drive a relay with it, to run a 12v car horn etc.

Re: External alarm buzzer for Matsutec AIS HP-528A

Thanks! I thought of using the wires and signal for internal buzzer, to a relay to drive an external horn.
But in this case the external alarm will sound everytime internal buzzer beeps, isn't it?
An adding a switch to turn it off when I am awaken, for example, is just an invitation to forget to turn it back on when I take a nap.

For those interested or if you have any ideas, that's what the vendor said:
Quote:
The HP-528A RS232 and RS422 can output the alarm . You can find the connector meaning from the last page of the user manual for the 10pin port.
There is nothing in my manual and no further response from tech support.

Re: External alarm buzzer for Matsutec AIS HP-528A

I am not near mine at the moment, but I seem to remember a menu setting that had to be turned on to make the external buzzer circuit work.

Edit: Page 40 of the manual, section 2.7.6.

Note that the internal buzzer cannot drive a relay nor a external buzzerr!! It may work well a few times and than ...........no more.
A relay coil will use even more power than a buzzer
What you can do instead is to make up a single transistor circuit, which in term will act as a relay for a ext. 12V buzzer. (It will switch on a small transistor without any problems) Google for a simple circuit
I suggest you don't solder anything (introducing static). inside the unit and just use the alarm noise to drive the unit I suggested before.

By the way, The name Matsutec in not mentioned neither in the manual nor on the unit itself .. These are probably Chinese knock offs using stolen software and circuit design ?? who knows ??

Re: External alarm buzzer for Matsutec AIS HP-528A

Thanks pendragon, I understand that it's too underpowered and as I don't know how to insert a transistor etc I've already followed your path and ordered a microfone I just hope it won't get activated by engine noise and the various sounds inside the boat.

Thanks GILow. My paper manual only has 37 pages and no such explanation.

Maybe they output XTE message on RS232 bus and expect the user to make an external computer to analyse RS232 data, decode XTE word and act accordingly. However such a thing doesn't seem to be "External Alarm output port".

Ehh...... You should mount the mic as close as poss to the buzzer output side, you could even glue(hot melt) them together( leave 2 mm space or so)
Than set the potentiometer to only act on buzzer noise (some experimenting will be needed)thus cutting out any external noise.
Keep an eye out for correct polarity..
Let me know how you got on please( out of curiosity)
Good luck.

Hi Emmalina! Please be more specific, where did the wires go? Inside the unit, and where exactly? On the external data port, and on which pins? I have no clue.

Thanks for your reply.

So get the online electronic copy and read it. The paper manuals that ship with electronics are nearly always incomplete, they are too busy rushing the product to market and know that they can supplement the manual later online.

(Here, I even googled it for you...

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/93...ec-Hp-33a.html

)

It is quite simple, you need to turn it on in the menu system.

It will then work.

You have the wiring codes from the other posts.

Stuffing around with sound activated external devices is adding needless complexity and points of failure.
