Extending seatalk 1 cable

Hey all,

I have an old seatalk 1 cable that goes from my Raymarine autopilot to the control head. The cable is too short for the new position of the control unit. Can I splice into this cable? If so, what type of wire do I need to extend it? Thank you in advance for any tips!

Any 3 core that is not smaller than the original. Maybe one size larger if extending more than a few feet.

And if you are going larger trim the current wire down to pigtail length at both ends in order to use more of the upgraded wire.

Great. Thank you! Got some Ancor 14ga triplex. Going to give that a try.

Best to use a shielded cable. On SeaTalk, the common line is the ribbon conductor which is also a shield. You can use 2 conductor with shield and use the shield as common, or 3+shield, but the shield needs to be connected to common.
