Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

Don't forget a good water filter -something with multiple stages and a 1/2 micron final. You need it to be portable and fed with a typical garden hose.

OpenCPN can do everything you want. Just get a good tablet from their list... BU353S4 & dAISy or RTL-SDR and a backup Marine GPS + SW Radio.

And wire rope cutters with BIG handles!

Forget a fridge, radar, sonar, TV, easy chair or autopilot or SSB for now-get your solar power and power needs/ storage set up and working well.

Fin+skeg in your size range and load-out isn't as safe as a designed-for-oceans underbody.

Flemming vane as you can have it with an external outboard.

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

There's a thread on here has a checklist somewhere that is good. I don't know the link.. . For S.Pac & SE Asia I'd also bring a serious first aid kit with lots of sea sick pills and at least a few extra syringes -they change rules and you don't want to be getting some mandatory re-immunization for entry and pick up HEP or Dengue (or worse) from someone else's needles! 😁

Pickled one, some of your hints are fine, but please... the above is only your opinion and not based on fact, and hardly a response to the OP's request.

There have been and still are many threads addressing the hull shape controversy. Try those for discussions, arguments, rants and hiding amongst all that, some useful info for newbies.

Perhaps this should have come first: welcome to CF. Some info in your profile and avatar statements would help us relate to you and any questions you might pose in the future.

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

This thread is a waste of time for the OP.

He’s never going anywhere and encouraging him only hastens his demise or worse.

True, but its the depth of winter for those of us in the higher northern latitudes. Boats are quietly laid up in mud berths or perched up on frames like a dinosaurs in a museum.

So time for planning ahead and thinking of voyages to come, watching you tube to see the places you want to visit. Pouring over charts and reading Cornell, even watching a couple of old blokes visiting pubs on the English South Coast until the spring thaw and the boatyards become a hive of activity again.

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

Watch the 1950's movie by the Hiscocks called Beyond the West Horizon. The video is around $6 to download and the DVD is around $20. I think the movie is around an hour and a half long.

In particular, watch the part about their provisioning. This will give you a good perspective about how much they had to carry for portions of their trip. They do a pretty decent job of describing many details that we talked about in this thread. Even though this trip took place in the 1950s, there is still much to be gained by watching it.

Here is a link to the trailer. You can also find it on the sailing channel.
