I just showed him an islander 33 in lake superior for under 10k so not likely to come out west for a 32 ( same boat just 33 is flush deck )

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

Btw . . . I don't think it has been posted in this thread yet . . . . this is the 'official definitive' list of required equipment (for offshore racing).

Offshore Safety regulations

It is an excellent reference. For your budget and plan it is way overkill. But it is always worth knowing what the 'best practice' is.

^ I (think I) fixed it above (#155). The end of the link somehow did not get included - you needed this part "[20554].pdf" to be included

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

re equipment . . . . I think the priorities and list is mostly pretty streightforward given the budget and boat size, but for me the big open question is about weather info. There is a whole range of options - from using a wifi cafe ashore to pick departure window and then just taking it as it comes while at sea . . . . to the full grib/satphone/weather routing software setup . . . and a bunch of possible incremental steps in between.

I really enjoyed 'doing' weather while at sea. It filled up the time I used to previously spend trying to figure out where the H&^l we were in the sextant days, and it was rewarding when I did some very clever weather routing. But especially on a small slow boat the opportunity to do anything with the information will be pretty limited.

I think I would lean toward a simple all band receive - listen to the weather nets and get weatherfax. Very inexpensive, and low power usage, and gives you quite a bit of info, probably all you can really use on this sort of boat.

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

Highly recommend one of the many apps that allow you to download the entire contents of Wikipedia to your mobile device for offline use. A link to a Wikipedia article about some of the various free and paid apps follows-

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List...e_applications

Typical app downloads do not include photos, text only, so are not that big in size. Some are better than others in terms of searchability and links.

I did this to have additional access to medical information as a reference for our Atlantic crossing but fortunately did not need it for this purpose.

Instead we found it to be useful for learning about unexpected marine life we encountered as well as to stave off "information-withdrawal" symptoms we encountered during the weeks we spent unplugged.

Also great for resolving a couple of trivia disputes that occurred amongst the crew. Really, anything you might normally look to Wikipedia for in your regular daily life.

In my eyes absolutely essential equipment for any ocean crossing.

A wonderful wealth of information at your finger tips. Can cost nothing depending on the app, so not a budget issue. Knowledge is power. Who knows, might even save your ass in pinch!

Happy sailing!

So basically go SSB/pactor with weatherfax?

Two things originally not high up on my list have now caught my attention. First is the windvane system so I can rest and not have to be at the helm all day. Second is a lot of people suggested j invest in a radar system.

I was researching those and the cheaper systems seem to run about $1500. A lot of them say 3G or 4G radar. I had always assumed sonar would be sufficient for seeing anything in the water coming your way.

Can I get more opinions on radar?

I haven't heard back yet. I've emailed several boat sellers and no replies. Perhaps they're all on vacation.

Re: Equipment list for Pacific crossing

If I had to re-prioritize my list based on what I've learnt.

From top priority to lowest.

Ground Tackle
Windvane System
Auto Inflating Jacket with Jackline Harness
PLB
Bilge Pump (Manual)
Fire Extinguisher
Marine Batteries
VHF + Antenna
Fishing Gear
Desalinator (Manual)
Bilge Pump (Electric)
Solar Panels
Drogue/Sea Anchor
Depth Sensor/Sonar
SSB
Pactor Modem
Laptop with Open CPN + Weatherfax
GPS (likely come with sonar system)
Radar System
Outboard/Inboard Motor with Alternator
10G Fuel Tank (bigger if inboard and tank is built in)
Dinghie
Life Raft
Handheld VHF (waterproof)
Handheld GPS (waterproof)
Propane Stove/Hibachi
Portable Electric Cooler (low power usage, can keep fish for 1-2 days)
Ice Maker (likely only if the boat comes with one as they seem very expensive to buy and install)

Extras (not prioritized in order)

Netting Surrounding Life Lines
Backup Rudder (even if I just bring boards and pvc with hinges to manually attach to the back of the boat)
Handtools (including handsaw)
Nautical Paper Charts
Binoculars
Spare Parts
Extra Nylon Rope (100')
Epoxy Mix
Fibreglass Stranding (plastic stranding like what they make bags of rice from)
Cardboard
Small Pieces of Wood/Plywood

Food/Water

20-30G Water Storage (based on boat capacity)
Additional 10-20G Container (separated from main)
Additional 5-10G of Water (in 1 litre or 1G containers spread around ship)
Primarily Dry Food (Nuts, Fruit, Beef Jerky)
Canned Food (very small amount)
Survival Rations x3 Packages (3600 calories 72 hours each - kept with ditch gear)
Random Condiments (spices)

If I'm missing anything essential please add to it. I didn't bother listing sails or a boat or the things normally attached to a boat because that's a given. Also if anyone has any first hand suggestions for particular items I'd appreciate that. Ie. What Sonar or Radar you use (be considerate of budget, I can't afford a $6000 system).

Thanks for all the help along the way!
