Re: EPIRB

Just to technically correct, you want a PLB (personal locator beacon) rather than a EPIRB if attaching to a lifejacket. An EPIRB is just too big compared to an PLB.

As a lifejacket is much harder to see than say a boat, get a PLB with an internal GPS, it will be worth the extra dollars if you ever have to use it.

As for type and model, it will depend a bit on where you are in the world and what is available locally.

While this link is Oz based, it does have some useful info:
GPS Australia - EPIRB - 406Mhz Emergency Beacon compare (PLB)

I use a GME MT 410G.

Re: EPIRB

ACR will be releasing a new PLB in the very near future that has some very neat features. It's tiny! It's street price will be under $300.00. To get it this small it loses it's ability to float so it would need to be attached to the life jacket. Their messaging service is also very nice. It allows you to send an I'm OK message to up to five addresses or numbers. I think it also sends your position. To send the message you just activate the test function of your EPIRB or PLB.

Re: EPIRB

I have a McMurdo fastfind with GPS McMurdo

It is well regarded and there is a good review at equipped.org McMurdo Fast Find PLB - Initial Evaluation - EQUIPPED TO SURVIVE (tm)

Re: EPIRB

Those pages were created in 2003 and updated in 2004. The market has moved on - the page I referenced earlier reviews a PLB that isn't on those pages!
