EPIRB

2 questions on EPIRBs:

1. I think I recently saw reference to a changed standard for EPIRBs that indicated that there is a new technology such that older EPIRBs will in the near future not be effective for emergency position locationing. Hence, there may be a requirement to update/replace existing EPIRBs. Can anyone provide some definitive knowledge about this?

2. If point #1 is not the case, I need some advice on the transferability of an existing EPIRB. Our fully equipped (for liveaboard cruising) 2005 Admiral 38 catamaran that we recently purchased has an EPIRB that would have been registered to the previous owners. Can I change the base information on this device so that it would provide emergency locational service to the new owners? We are starting our first 6 month Bahamas/Caribbean cruise this coming winter and I want to ensure that I have a fully functional EPIRB.
