Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

"Ray"

He's old and cantankerous. Sometimes he just likes to do his own thing without regard to my directional desires.

He's about to get replaced with "Ray II".

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

I call mine Harry. I have no idea why. I think I just like saying, "I'll let Harry drive." It's a Raymarine SPX-5 Wheeldrive I bought two seasons ago to replace the old one that literally fell apart at the helm. On cruises, Harry does the great majority of the driving, and he does a fine job most of the time.

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

My wife always seemed to "pig the wheel" when we were sailing, particularly offshore except for long passages. We didn't have an autopilot for the first fifteen years of cruising. My autpilot is an old Benmar married to a Nexus control head and we call it "Miss Piggy".

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

Our Simrad is called Simo (common Finnish male's name). And he's a very reliable and important crew member for us.

Our old auto pilot was called Helminen as he was an Autohelm. He was kind of crazy and we often thought he should be locked up in an institution. After telling him a new course, it took forever for him to steady the course.

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

On my old sports fisher it was called "Iron Mike"

You have to remember to shut it off before trying to avoid flotsam.

We call ours Lucille, since she always finds a "fine time to leave"

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

We started out with a wood freeman on our Colvin, so hence the name woodie! so all our pilots are named Woodie, keeps things simple! and at our age simple is where it's at !! works for us !

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

Our Monitor is named Morley. To understand the name one would have to know and love the Dave and Morley stories on the Canadian radio show, Vinyl Cafe.

we had wiggly issues with Otto until we went and looked at the unit and found the tiller arm a bit loose. Might want to check...

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

The first Auto pilot on my Commercial Troller was a Wagner Mark IV. It was called "Iron Mike". The auto pilot I have now is an Autonav with all the bells and whistles. It is a big improvement over the previous one but it is still called "Iron Mike. I guess that I am just lazy, when it comes to names.

Mine is named "Gldays". Because I'm always "Gladys her driving and not me".

Re: Does Your Auto Pilot Have a Name?

My boat used to be owned by the actor who played the dad on Lost in space. I have two auto pilots: "Robot" and "Robbie"
