DIY update to Datamarine Wind Instrument

Hi folks,

I'm considering a fun (well, fun for a geek) little project to get the data from my old datamarine wind speed/direction unit out to my GPS, or my openCPN machine, etc.

With something like a Raspberry Pi it should be trivial to sample the proprietary datamarine masthead interface, interpret it, and pass it on in some more standard format.

Has anyone already done this? What would be the most useful output interface?

Not familiar with that unit, but an arduino might be better suited than a Pi, it will enable you to measure voltage or read serial data and rewrite it as nmea sentences to send out either as rs232 (with a little bit of hardware) or usb. . For less power & cost. Much as i love Pi's
