Re: Digital Barometers? Needs An Update!

What we really need is someone on CF who owns one of these superdooper gold plated $$$$$$$$ digital barographs to do some comparative testing alongside a $40 'no-name' branded one.

If it is anything like clocks where both cheap and expensive often share the same movement I suspect they all share the same sensitive element.

The clock exception to the rule is of course the Weems and Plath one that takes the 'N' battery....

Re: Digital Barometers? Needs An Update!

Serious question:

With weather data reported practically everywhere, for most of us, isn't this a lot like owning a sextant? I have one on my boat, I had one on the boat (OP), glanced at it occasionally, and finally removed it since i was just clutter. I have no use for the data since I am a coastal sailor.

This was 'coastal' and came out of a clear blue sky with a steady baro.
It never appeared on any weather forecast.

Sorry about the quality, and the bar graph was refreshing when the photo was taken but the word 'plummet' comes to mind.

Did the baro forewarn us? Nope..... however I wouldn't be without one...

I would bet that the good ones have better sensors.

HOWEVER, does that mean that the cheap ones, aren't accurate enough to be useful? How much accuracy is needed?

My guess is that it doesn't matter. For whatever it may be worth --

My pretty cheap consumer type weather station which I inherited from my boat's previous owner:

Always agrees exactly with the barometer in my WSO100, which always agrees exactly with local weather stations (Bramblemet at the moment).

I guess decent accuracy (to 1 millibar anyway) is not hard to achieve.

Re: Digital Barometers? Needs An Update!

There will be an announcement of a new product in a few months that can cover this and much more. Beta testers are being welcomed.

The system records temperature, pressure and humidity 24/7 and can alert the user if the pressure drops too quickly. You can also scroll back in time. A quick preview is below. The sensor is a Bosch device and is being calibrated at the factory. So far, it matches the numbers from the different weather websites.

I use a free prograsm called Pressure Tracker on my android smartphone. Will give you historical data and has an "Storm Alarm" that you can set to notify you of pressure drops over a user selected rate.

Presume the same type of program exists for iPhones too.

I tried several Android apps and eventually settled on one called Barometer Altimeter DashClock by Aleksander Ciepela

I just checked 4 or 5 apps for IOS and none of them could alarm the user if the pressure drops too quickly. Also you need an iPhone 6 or better to use the baro.

I found the alarm on many of the baro apps was a nuisance on the phone. If I forgot to (or could not) turn it off every time I drove up a hill the damn thing would start beeping at me! Not such a problem at sea, but in port when you go ashore it quickly gets very irritating, especially since on one app it couldn't be disabled.

Re: Digital Barometers? Needs An Update!

I use my Suunto altimeter watch at the nav station. Which I originally bought for mountaineering.
It gives me the pressure and trend now. I can look up the past pressure readings that are logged every hour for the last 6 hours then every 6 hours for the last 4 days.
Its a great toy for a walk or mountain bike away from the boat too, just set 0 altitude before leaving the boat and it can log the climbs and descents all day.
