Digital Barometers

I realize that this topic has come up before; however, I am keen on getting some updated opinions on the topic. I am interested in any input on digital barometers that have served cruising sailors well.

Here are some of the options:

The Conex Jumbo
Conex JDB1 Jumbo Digital Barometer | BSWUSA.com

The MeteoMan
http://www.nasamarine.com/proddetail.php?prod=MeteoMan

The ASI
Barograph - Buy a Precision Digital Barograph Barometer from ASI

The Vetus (discontinued?)
Vetus Meteoliner Electronic Baroscope

Any others worth mentioning? Any experience ?

Re: Digital Barometers

Get the MeteoMan.

The Vetus is terrific but has been discontinued.

The Conex is a barometer, not a barograph

The ASI looks ok, but the power supply is AC

Re: Digital Barometers

Estarzinger,

Do you have any firsthand experience with the MeteoMan?

The ASI CAN be wired to a 12-volt system. Already spoke to ASI about this.

I realize the benefit of having a graphing barometer over one that just shows trend. However, quality is also important to me. Any more specific info?

I have the vetus.

I have seen and used the meteoman and it seems very nice. Perhaps just not quite as solid/bulletproof a build as the vetus but still good. I have never seen/used the ASI.

The Speedtech model I have is excellent, also, but I like that Vetus as well and would prefer the four-day aspect for offshore. Both are discontinued, of course.

You could look for used models or for something sitting in a warehouse, of course.

I've seen the Meteoman at the NASA boat show booth and it seems as basic but well-built as their AIS unit, which I like because it's nearly idiot-proof, at least to this idiot. So while I can't argue for long-term durability, there have been plenty of other AIS units introduced in the last three years, but I still like the NASA model as doing everything that I would ask of it at a good price.

Re: Digital Barometers

Have a little Brunton ADC unit that works very well. It has alarm for barometric rate of change, graph, a wind speed indicator, and lots of other weather functions. Is hand-held so can always be where you can see/hear it. (Of course, always have the regular bulkhead mounted barometer as well) It uses disc batteries (CR 2025) that last a long time. These are designed for mountaineering so are really rugged, waterproof, etc.

Mine is from Weems and Plath. It gives alarms for wind forcast, etc. I like that it displays pressure history and trends.

Is this it?

Electronic Barometer | Weems & Plath

Seems like a pretty decent unit. Have you had it long?

Re: Digital Barometers

Why does everything have to be digital these days. My old SALEM has worked w/o depleting any batteries for over 30 years now.

Re: Digital Barometers

I have a garmin etrex vista handheld gps that has a barometer built in. It charts the pressure and allows you to look back at 4 days of history. I have it mounted at the nav station with the charger plugged in.

They're going for about $160, plus it's also a chart plotting gps

Re: Digital Barometers

I realize this thread is a few months old but if anyone would know where the Meteoman can be purchased here in the USA, the info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Its available from Amazon. I found it cheaper to buy it in the UK from an online discounter and have them ship it to the US.
Good unit.

Re: Digital Barometers

My brother gave me a Meade wireless weather station a few months ago. Its cheap (<$30) and Chinese, and runs on batteries, and gives temp, humidity, pressure (with history), and time. I've been tracking the barometer against the weather radio, and its within 1 mb.

My very expensive Chelsea analog barometer is not as good--once the pressure drops below 995 mb, it visibly dives another 15 mb, and doesn't recover until the real pressure gets back over 1000. Very disconcerting at sea.

Re: Digital Barometers

And an argument for having both an analog and a digital baro, it would seem.
