Re: Digital Barometers

So do we need to have an electric barometer (that is easy and reliable) and a backup mechanical (which is tougher to read but does not use satellites) for world cruising???

I walked onto a boat recently that still had the mercury column. Why don't you trust the original?

Re: Digital Barometers

I sometimes think it is a nice idea to have two barometers on the boat. Not sure how delicate (or not) the mechanical ones are. (?)

Having a barometer that keeps a record of pressure readings helps tremendously. Otherwise it is back to the hourly or so barometer record keeping.

The paper barographs are also expensive and sometimes running the engine affects their reading (such as when they are next to a bulkhead).

So, I like the electronic ones....

?

But only the paper based one will keep the record. So, with your electronic whatever, you still have to record the readings in regular periods of time.

Re: Digital Barometers

The NASA unit has a 160hr record keeping feature. That would be enough for me to get idea.

I have a Schatz one that says "made in West Germany" on it (that dates it for a start) I bought on Ebay. I think it was made in the 60s or 70s. Still works perfectly. It cost me $150, the same as a new "made in China" Weems & Plath.

As it's at least 40 years old, they can't be that delicate.

There are always a few on Ebay, like this :

Re: Digital Barometers

Just to throw a wrinkle into the pot . . .

$350 gets a "weather station / data logger" that talks to ur laptop. U have to shop around.

Davis vannage vue 6250, or similar.

Why does EVERYTHING have to be marine??

Re: Digital Barometers

Without question, the Aquatech unit is the best. I have used mine for about 3 yrs now, its so accurate that you get a different reading if you raise it 6ft! It tracks history etc. and has an alarm. I have had excellent advice/support from Aquatech in USA, which was just as well as my boat is in Italy. Its not cheap, but it is Rolls Royce quality.
