Data Marine Depth Sounder

My old Data Marine transponder still works fine except the LCD display is fading and hardly readable.
Can I replace it? I mean the LCD.
It is a S200 DL Serial # 20589

Thanks
Wolfgang

Re: Data Marine Depth Sounder

My Raymarine speed guage had an annoying black spot in the middle - I think my old boat partner ran it with the cover on or something.

Anyhow, I took it apart and there are no user serviceable parts inside. The LCD is one glass unit.

I kept my eye out here on CF and eBay and eventually bought a new/used one.

Re: Data Marine Depth Sounder

The old Data Marine instruments are pretty basic and use TTL chips, just one step up from discrete components. I have had a couple apart and effected repair. Never had a bad display though.

It could be so simple as the power supply voltage going to the display is low, that can make an LCD dim. Check all connections and voltages.

Every thing Data Marine used in their production of these instruments was off the shelf components from a wholesale house. The trick now is if they are still available after all this time. What do you have to loose? Open it up and see if you can fine a number on the LCD, then track it down. Try Newark Electronics they still carry quite a bit of TTL chips. Be a little careful, the LCD is fragile until it's securely in place.

My 1967 Islander had the same issue with the display I contacted Data Marine and they had me package up the instrument shipped to them and they repaired.

Re: Data Marine Depth Sounder

I used a ray marine st40 bi data display to replace my data marine display. Data marine transducer works fine with it.
