There arnt a lot of iridium handsets to choose from , mainly The Motoroal 9500 ( obselete), 9505,9505A and the latest 9555. The later the better. But I go a secondhand 9500 on ebay a few years ago ( with loads of extras) for 200 dollars. But I think the various wars recently have dried up the secondhand market. All the 9000 series are good performers, with the latest units being more robust and offering things like two way SMS etc

Other then that its off to a satphone dealer on the net.

not directly, but you can connect via a satphone link to the internet and use a company that serves out the weather faxs on email. ( like mailasail etc.).. i used it crossing the atlantic

Re: Cost-Effective Sat Comms ?

hi dave, thanks for the info. would appreciate a bit more specifics -- how long it takes to get the weatherfax, typically how much it costs per shot, etc. many thanks. also, is mailasail you mentioned similar to sailmail? excuse my ignorance...

On the Atlantic trip I spent about 900 dollars in 25 days of downloading just weather fax data plus a few small emails and 4 phone calls. The weather fax ( three pages) took about 6-8 minutes and regularly the call dropped and had to be restarted. Sometimes inexplicably we just couldn't get a reliable connection ( lots of 2-10 sec calls) and had to wait.

It worked well but it was expensive. I don't use it as much now.
