Connect DSC to Seatalk (1)

I searched for threads that address this issue, but they seem to get very complicated quickly.

I'm trying to connect my VHF DSC to the GPS that is connected through Seatalk. I was hoping to just splice the wires from the VHF connector that came with the radio into the Seatalk wire.

The VHF is about 5 years old and is a West Marine VHF 480 model 15088198. The manual says to connect the green and yellow wires to the GPS NMEA Data in and out. Will it work to connect those wires to Seatalk? My GPS antenna is connected to Seatalk.

It also says to connect the brown and white wires to the Chartplotter NMEA Data. My Raymarine c120 has a 5-pin NMEA port, but I don't have a connector. The plotter also has a 4-pin DSM port. Can I get plugs that will fit?

I just want to enable the distress call feature as simple as possible. Please help.

Re: Connect DSC to Seatalk (1)

The 5-pin connector for the C120 will be an NMEA 0183 connector. The crimping of the brown and white wires sounds like they are also NMEA 0183.

I think you might be looking for R08004 (Disclaimer: I can't see what you have, I'm just a guy on the internet)

Re: Connect DSC to Seatalk (1)

Gene,

Your radio does not understand Seatalk. The radio “speaks” NMEA-0183 which is an industry standard. All Raymarine MFD units have one or more NMEA-0183 connectors. You can connect that to your radio but not seatalk.

Sorry it isn’t so simple.
