Codan High Frequency Radios

I haven’t been able to find much about this subject on CF.

I’ve got a Codan 9323 HF radio with a 9350 autotune antenna. Probably 15 y.o. now but it’s a great unit . It’s set up in my 4wd (SUV) at present. I’m new to cruising so just wondering how well this system would adapt to the marine environment. I’d have to retune the stations of course.

I haven’t seen any marine autotunes yet – the 9323 has 400 stns – think it needs an autotune to deal with all of these. Can someone please tell me whether a Codan 9350 autotune can be used in a marine environment and also how well the 9323 would go?

I’ve read the 9323 is the land based version of the marine Codan 9390. Any idea what the differences are?

I have the Codan 9323 installed on my boat, set up as a 9390. It has been installed with an Icom auto tuner. It all works perfectly okay and kept me in touch on our trip to New Caledonia and Vanuatu.

All of the required marine frequencies and others of my choice (including those for weather fax and Sail Mail) were programmed in by a Codan agent in Brisbane. They supply a marine frequency list. They also added a socket for weather fax connection although in the end I never used this, going the way of Iridium phone and data connection for weather grib downloads and email. (Pactor modem was beyond that budget).

All in all, no problems with the 9323 on a boat.

GypsyHawk is correct; it will be a fine unit for the boat; especially as you already own and know how to use it (I presume ).

RF is RF and the radio doesn't care whether it is in your SUV or your boat.

Crewsers, if you're in Oz (perhaps even if you're not), try Exploreoz, vks737 websites. You have to monitor these sites - items you want may be available only every now and then. Ebay not bad either. Good luck
