JC has several high power wifi transmitters made for marine and marina environments. One of the units that is light weight, but high power is the 500mW AMU2405 and with an omni antenna, you can expect a range of about 2000 feet to the nearest access point.

There is a new product that is inexpensive and is a 1 watt device with a 7 db gain omni antenna. It is a USB connection, so it plugs directly into a computer. Comes with 15' of cable, but the folks at there have active USB extension cables for a total of up to 45' of cable. We used one on a cruise ship (they wanted $.55 per minute for internet0 but we were able to pick up several free signals in port as well as approaching port - I'd guess about 1-2 miles out. The device is an AOU2410. We found it at Long range outdoor wireless solutions, outdoor wireless network antennas, point to point wireless, point to multipoint, wifi access points, wifi repeaters, outdoor wireless network products and would recommend it to anyone.
