Carrying a EPIRB in Checked Luggage?

We will be needing a new EPIRB soon. Our antenna is falling apart and we will need a new battery. Plus we are in Polynesia and it's difficult to get gear sent down

ACR has come out with a new EPIRB that has a 10 year battery life and the battery is user changeable! Finally!!!

I spoke to the ACR tech manager and he said this EPIRB you can fly with in your luggage.

Has anyone flown with the ACR global fix V 4?

ACR GlobalFix V4 EPIRB - Category 2

Thanks

Chuck

Re: Carrying a EPIRB in Checked Luggage?

I've carried ACR Epirbs on Qantas and LAN with no probs..

From the qantas site...

EPIRBs and Personal Locator Beacons
Airline Approval Required - No
Carry-on Baggage - Yes
Checked Baggage - Yes

No Operator (airline) approval is required for the following:

lithium ion batteries under 101Wh;
lithium metal batteries with a lithium metal content less than 2g; or
non-spillable batteries under 12V and 101Wh.
NOTE: Watt hours (Wh) are determined by multiplying the voltage (V) by the amp hours (Ah). ie. V x Ah = Wh

Re: Carrying a EPIRB in Checked Luggage?

My friend just flew to Thailand from LAX with my new EPIRB. She checked it in her luggage. I will say that when they asked her about any lithium batteries in her checked luggage, she said no. All went through OK. Some times the less you say the better.

Better to carry in carry on luggage I would think.

It often doesn't go well if you get caught lying though.
