Can I Paint GPS Antenna?

Hi,
To make our external GPS antenna less attractive to thieves I would like to spray it with rattle can paint. Will this compromise the operation of the unit? Regards, Richard.

Not really; while it is not recommended, it rarely makes a difference in the real world.

The RF will pass through most paint films in the same way as they will pass through dodger fabric or glass or thin fiberglass etc.

You should at least check to make sure the paint isn't lead based or include heavy metals. As long as the paint isn't high durability industrial or military grade stuff it's unlikely that will be a problem, but better safe than sorry.

How about spray-painting a piece of paper large enough to cover the unit? Go into the mode where it shows the satellites and their signal strength and observe the levels. Now cover the GPS with the paper and see if there's any signal strength change.

I doubt it will make much difference but you never know what some of those chemicals in the paints really are.
