Butyl tape

Am installing a new garmin auto pilot. Wondering if butyl tape will have a ill effect on the casing/wires. The nmea wires are passing through a lazzarette and need sealant. I like using butyl but had a concern that the oils could damage the casing or wire. Any experience.

Re: Butyl tape

It shouldn't be a problem with the typical ABS or acrylic or polycarbonate, etc. cases and certainly not with the wiring insulation. But if oyu really want to be sure, ask Garmin what the case material is and whether there's a problem. They'll probably say "Huh?" but it is free to ask.

Re: Butyl tape

There is a gray butyl tape that is less oilly and usually used on coax cables. Also comes in white.

And I thought no one would have a clue as it's such a small detail. thanks from sabray. I have both the grey and black butyl stuff so grey it is. Garmin support is great but they didn't know they suggest polysulphide.
