Butterfly, Loops, and Other Alternatives

So, after getting my tech and general, Im suddenly inundated with catalogs from various sources of RF houses.

One interesting new toy I thought might make for DX fun onboard

Loop Tuner #1
Loop Tuner #2

which made me think maybe there are alternative antennas and tuners to utilize for SSB or HAM and the like that don't necessarily need grounding and/or could act as an emergency backup.

Any takers or hacks out there?

There are LOTS of alternatives! Most use the tried and true backstay because it is relatively inexpensive, works pretty well, and doesn't get in the way of anything. It's not perfect, though. Nothing is. All of the choices will have trade-offs, and it is just a matter of deciding what trade-offs you want to pay for and live with.

Loop antennas work pretty well, but they are not omni-directional (which can be good, so long as you use it correctly), they emit far higher levels of RF than many other kinds of antennas, and the voltage levels are lethal. You need to be pretty careful if you're using one. Do NOT ignore the instructions and warnings that come with one if you buy it. DO be sure you know what you're doing if you build one.
