Re: Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

Thanks, Reefmagnet. I'll likely just do as you did.

I did find another 12V regulator here which might be elephant repellent but also would help isolate the unit from noise and power surge and help me sleep better.

My NUC is hardwired to the house 12v. Works fine.

Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

Our NUC is also wired directly to a 12V circuit on our boat... no problems at all for the past three years.

I just looked at the specs for my unit and it says the input voltage is 12-19V.

Re: Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

I've found Windows 10 itself to be quite good, and stable, and I've put it through quite a lot, although occasionally microsoft will replace a needed driver in an update.

Re: Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

Yes, it is specified as 12-19vv. And generally boat voltage is somewhat above 12v. However a more stable power supply / voltage regulator won't hurt. I found that when I was running the monitor and several external drives that the extra voltage was needed. It's not that expensive an item.

Re: Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

Windows 10 Pro might be a better choice as it allow you more control over updates.
I use Open Shell to retain a more Win7 look and feel and get rid of the big tiles.

Otherwise, the NUC under Win 10 is just fine! Now I have to upgrade all my Office 2010 stuff which is losing support this year.

Have you considered Libre Office instead of Office 2010?

It runs under Windows, and offers just about everything MS Office has. Yet it's open source, free and without subscription.

Also fully compatible with the MS Office file formats.

I made the switch in 2016 and never looked back.

Re: Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

Agreed, I did not say we use Win10 Pro

Franzika thanks for the Libre Office suggestion!

I use VBA macros heavily in both Excel and Word. Libre Office would require extensive reprogramming. Otherwise it's a good idea.

I've used libreoffice for many years even though I have an annual subscription to the enterprise version of office 365. except for vba macros it does everything as good as, if not better, than office. The only exception, imo, is Access which is a better application than the Base app. To counter that though, Draw is a poor man's Visio which isn't included with Office.

I tend to agree with this except the "Outliner" functions in the LibreOffice word processor are much more difficult to use.

LibreOffice beats Office hands down when it comes to pricing.

Re: Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

An attempt to keep this thread alive! Finally going to pull trigger on a boat NUC. Mimicking digital yacht unit using the NUC10i7FNH with 512GB SSD and 16GB ram. Wanted extra power in case I go back to work and need to run GIS software. Will install Linux Mint to start/learn as I am tired of windows bloat and annoying user enhancements. On thing that has been elusive is a 12v monitor solution. Even on this thread, user ask for specifics, but get "i use a 12v monitor". What specific make/model works for you? A USB/LED seems like the goto technology for low power, but is there also a power supply or wall wort? Do you cut the DC wires of the wall wort and splice to your 12v supply? Details like that please. I get a new computer when the old one dies every 5-10 years. I am a noob.

How big a monitor do you need? I use 5vdc powered monitors of 13" and 15.6" size. these are sold as "portable monitors" at a choice of resolutions up to 4k

Re: Built Boat Computer from Intel NUC

Need and want is the dilemma. I currently have a 22" which is what is left of a home desktop dual screen. One died and both are 120v. Long story version: living on boat so this is my desktop computer system. I want to mount to bulkhead to swivel 180 degrees for nav stuff at station and movies in solon flipping monitor on locking mount of some sort. 17-22" would be ideal. Also considering tablet for redundant navigation tools in cockpit also.
I found a thread from 2016 covering this topic.

Perusing to see if it is still relevant.

Thanks for the input.
