Best place to mount new Chartplotter

Hi there, I'm about to buy a Garmin chartplotter, probably echo50s or similiar. I'm just wondering if the screen is readable in sunlight as I'd like to mount it in the cockpit next to the companionway. Any advice is most appreciated.
Oh, and how far should it be from the compass? ( I can't seem to find the distance on the Garmin website)
Thanks
