Best New Computer for Cruisers? Six Watts!

Great new product out: Fit PC-2
Super-small, uses 6 watts, aluminum construction, vibration/shock resistant, no fan, light weight and cheeeeeeep. $250-450, depending on set-up.

That with an LED montor that consumes 10ish watts would be nice for the nav station, you could turn the monitor off when not in use and always let the computer run 24/7.

I was doing some research and they have a new improved model coming out any day now.

Nice.. I've just built myself a similar one with an Nvidia Ion chip, which allows HD movie playback - at a few watts of power consumption!

I've played with one at work running xubuntu. Fine for email, web, basic office programmes, looking at images etc. Will have to try it with openCPN and zygrib sometime.

Fell over with video though. I'm currently playing with an Atom 330 + NVIDIA Ion solution to allow faster operation and video playback in a 30W device.

We just added a Fit PC to the computers on the research boat. Its a tiny little bugger but is not very powerful at all.

Sounds like it will be great as for charting programs and light duty use, which is what I am after. It is definitely a better option the the old notebook in the cockpit, yes?
Perhaps performance will improve if they sell well.
