For iridium, there are two kinds of SIMs, prepaid and postpaid.

Aside from that, each reseller has a locked sim in a way. IE: resellers can only manage the sim cards they sell.

Surely all the rules about keeping it active are set by Iridium?

Yes and no. Some rules are set by iridium, some are merely accepted norms. The best thing to do is fine a reseller who you can trust and they can help you determine the best options for your needs.

As far as managing, I mean that the sim card is tied to the reseller.

If you get a sim from a reseller for a monthly plan, only that reseller can process payments yes, but also only that reseller can adjust your plan up and down from the available options.

For prepaid, only the original reseller of the sim card can top it up, check balance, etc.

We primarily use our Sailmail account and Airmail software with the Go. It works really well and allows us to use the HF/Pactor as a backup system (It was our primary system for the first few years of full time cruising).


We keep the Iridium email address to ourselves and only use it if we need to transfer files bigger than will work with Airmail.
