Re: B&G Triton Display Owners

Being a software engineer I can tell you that the worst part of the job is documentation! We see it as a job for "someone else", like the Project Manager who see it as a job of "someone else"

Looking at: AIVDM/AIVDO protocol decoding

I don't see anything in the protocol preventing Class B from transmitting heading, but there is a '511' 'not available' code.

Now that I think about it more, that probably is the case as most Class B AIS units don't have access to a compass (unless N2K connected).

So Furuno's orientation of the triangle on the screen is based on heading plus they draw an arrow showing COG..?? If heading in missing, IMO, they should use COG for orientation of the triangle. It simply looks stupid to have some targets pointed in the direction of travel and others pointed straight up.

BTW, Class B does the same a Class A except (per the USCG site):

- Has a reporting rate less than a Class A (e.g. every 30 sec. when under 14 knots, as opposed to every 10 sec. for Class A)
- Does not transmit the vessel's IMO number
- Does not transmit ETA or destination
- Does not transmit navigational status
- Is only required to receive, not transmit, text safety messages
- Is only required to receive, not transmit, application identifiers (binary messages)
- Does not transmit rate of turn information
- Does not transmit maximum present static draught

Re: B&G Triton Display Owners

But HDG is always present in Class A, whereas only GPS information is present ( generally) in class B, so if teh vessel isnt moving a class B AIS reception could contain nonsense COG info, so maybe Furuno just 000s the icon.

The Furuno icon phenomenon isn't tied to non-moving vessels, I've seen it on vessels underway. I agree, it's a programming choice Furuno made. And it's certainly plausible to 000 a non-moving vessel when HDG is missing.

It's unclear whether Class A is 'required' to transmit HDG as it has the same '511' code available in the protocol.

Re: B&G Triton Display Owners

Again, I have never noticed this! Now that I know this and want to see it, I am tied up in a river for the next few months. Can't believe something so obvious has escaped my attention!

I'll make the drive one of these days and get it updated, but given the new features, I'll need to figure out how to use them. Specifically the engine monitors: a big improvement over two dummy lights.

So can I swap out the various sensors now in place? I'm running a Yanmar 2GM.

BTW: I'm returning to this thread's original subject: the Triton and its recent updates. And I'm aware of and hoping to avoid this expense: Maretron EMS100 Analog Engine Monitor | Blue Heron Marine Electronics

It appears Furuno is fixing this issue. Version 2.11 version history is out (no software yet). 5th point on the list.

Per Furuno, the icon acts as I described with any target missing the heading data, so it is not strictly associated with Class B targets as I had surmised.

Wow. I just got off the phone with a parts guy at Mack Boring in New Jersey and he spent quite a bit of time to determine that Yanmar's newest, biggest engines still use analog sensors.

Which means the only way a Triton can display engine data is using the $465 Maretron converter. Assuming most if not all boats built since the NMEA standard was adopted are converting these signals, there's got to be a better way, right?

Woops. You also have to buy a wiring harness. Total cost: $690.

Noland Engineering has a couple of units that might work. The MD33 and/or RS11. I have not done much to evaluate suitability for purpose, so YMMV.
