Autopilot: Raymarine X5 vs CPT

I have a Tartan 37, (16000lb) and am looking to buy an autopilot. Would greatly appreciate any info on the above two units - as they are more or less in my price range. Thank you.

Re: Autopilot: Raymarine X5 vs CPT

I would go with the CPT any day myself, but there are a few caveats. The raymarine pilot has the ability to interface with a wind instrument or a gps, the CPT does not. Both will steer a compass course. To disengage the CPT is a little more trouble than the raymarine, but not a big deal once you're used to it.
I have sailed with the CPT before, and as far as I'm concerned one of the best "simple" autopilots out there.

Re: Autopilot: Raymarine X5 vs CPT

The RM is two generations ahead of a CPT. It has a rate gyro which enhances course stability significantly, especially in gusty conditions. The RM uses an electronic compass, the CPT uses a mechanical compass, an actual liquid damped compass ball. The CPT drive is fairly user serviceable and powerful. It uses a window crank motor that you likely can find if it needs replacement. The CPT looks well sealed against harsh environments.

If I had a full keel boat that steers straight line anyway maybe the CPT would be a good choice as yaw correction isn't going to be big deal due to the slow vessel dynamics.
