Autohelm 3000

I have an old Autohelm 3000 on the boat I just purchased. Does anuyone know if you have to remove the steering wheel to attach the drive belt? I cannot see any other way unless it is supposed to stretch over the wheel which mine will not do. Is there something I am missing?

Re: Autohelm 3000

It's been a few years, but IIRC the answer is yes, wheel must come off. But. I suppose it depends on the diameter of your wheel, and whether you had the standard length belt... if the drum was mounted on the back side of the wheel.

Not the greatest a/p ever, but ours would drive our boat (old IOR one-tonner) pretty well. Keep the control box dry, for they were notorious for getting water inside.

Oh... is yours one with the knob on top to set the course, or one with push buttons? The former were even worse about leakage!

Re: Autohelm 3000

I mounted the drive wheel on the outside of the wheel, that way the belt slips on and off, no problem. It's all in how you mount it.

I have a posting where you can add a wireless remote for $14 to the old autohelm 3000. http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-a-168163.html

Re: Autohelm 3000

Mine is the newer version with just the buttons on the box.
I think the one I used before had the drive wheel mounted on the the outside of the steering wheel as well.
Thanks for your reply's. I appreciate it. Good sailing all.
