Re: Auto-tiller to windvane self-steering

Thanks for the advice, but my problem is really a software issue. I will look through the ST1000 manual again, but didn't see what I was looking for when I searched it last. I tried just winging it, but that didn't work -- the Autotiller ended up over-extending and breaking the bracket I had made to hold it in place.

Don't think you'll find a software solution.. they're simple machines and not designed for fore and aft operations, just settle on your heading by compass then switch to auto and it'll perform fine.. with the lines and block method direct to the paddle.

Re: Auto-tiller to windvane self-steering

I have already done this and it works very well in calmer conditions (once it gets rough just put the vane on). There are things to carefully measure to make sure that you get maximum swing of the aries "vane" but without the tiller pilot tearing the head off. I have a diagram and some (not very good) pictures if you want to e-mail me at pete.jobson@gmail.com

Re: Auto-tiller to windvane self-steering

The autopilot should work with the vane off and is meant to be used while motoring or motor-sailing in very calm weather. When the wind picks up, disconnect the autopilot and install the vane.
