Furuno is more reliable as has been said, Raymarine always has the larger glitsy stands at shows but there gear has up to know has been unreliable. Not much help having warranty when your out in the ocean I would rather pay a little more for something that is unlikely to need warranty, Furuno.

Reason for Garmin dealer discontent.

I believe that Garmin tried to implement a policy that restricted the sale of the new 6000 series plotters to only certain dealers - i.e. only dealers who were also installers / maintenance techs. This, I believe, led to outlets like Defender canceling orders. Garmin then, I think, blinked, because all of a sudden outlets like Defender are once again featuring Garmin gear.

Almost any consumer marine electronics can be purchased through discount online resellers like Defender, Consumers Marine, etc. This includes Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad, Lowrance and Furuno.

Some people will always be better served by shopping through a local full service installing / maintaining dealer, usually at a higher cost. Others are quite comfortable buying 'white boxes' through warehouses and handling warranty / support issues on their own. Vive la difference!

We have 3 Garmin units aboard, a 2006C, a 162 (at the helm) and a GPS Map 76 and all have worked well in the 8+ years we've owned them. The one problem I have with the company is the cost of up-dated chart chips/CD's and the fact that one can only load them on two devices.

FWIW...

I have a Garmin depth sounder/GPS/Chartplotter (came with the boat). It works fine, but when I replace it I will only consider something than uses C-Map. That still leaves several manufacturers to choose from, & the chart coverage is excellent.
If you want the most bang-for-your buck get a weather resistant laptop and put CMap on it. I did this years ago with a Magellan hand held GPS and a Toshiba Tecra 740CDT (not weather resistant but Panasonic Toughbooks were a bit pricey at the time) A yachtsman that I know reckons CMap is rubbish so he has upgraded to Tsunami as used by the navy! This plotter shows how depths vary with the rise and fall of the tide and it shows tidal streams. Amazing what you can get into a 22 foot yacht these days! I've seen old chart plotters at sales but as they use custom "bricks" (modules) to hold the charts they are a waste of space as upgrading will cost a fortune (that's if the manufacturer hasn't already decided that its obsolete) Stuff like that needs avoiding like the plague as it can become electronic scrap virtually overnight. Good luck!
