Antique Ratheon R40 Radar NEMA Connection

I've got an antique R40 radar that works perfectly. I'd like to keep using it. I'd also like to interface it's display with my Garmin 540 GPS to show position. The manual says that the R40 will accept 182, 183 info from a loran. Does this mean that the output from my GPS which may be similar or identical sentences to the loran sentences will work? Do any of the sailors that used loran know if the sentences are identical?

Re: Antique Ratheon R40 Radar NEMA Connection

You'll have to figure out what NMEA sentences the radar expects to see. Then you need to figure out which version of the NMEA sentences. My older Raymarine GPS (don't ask why I've still got it) outputs NMEA 1.5. A lot of newer equipment won't recognize it. It's probably easier just to hook up the two wires temporarily and see if it works. If it doesn't, then you can decide how much time and effort it's worth.
