Re: antenna

Check with Island Time PC
Bob is a cruiser and has been supporting a range of 802.11* systems including a range of POE designs well suited to boats at anchor

Use a Ubiquiti Bullet 802.11 connected to a marinized high gain omni antenna if you know what you're doing...otherwise look at the RogueWave product which is the same thing with an easy web interface for you.

Everything else will be less effective. That's from 25 years of experience. The only other broadband solutions with further range would be using a directional antenna, cellular carrier, or satellite. Good luck.

Re: Antenna wanted

Some USB wifi dongles are much more powerful than the built-in wifi radios in laptops. And can be put on the end of a USB extension to be it at a better height.

I have the Ubiquity Bullet, installed on my first spreader, and never used it once during a four-month cruise this summer. For the rare times when there was decent wifi around, the dongle was fine. 95% of the time we used mobile phone based internet -- a mifi device and a new SIM card in every country.

Re: Antenna wanted

We have the Ubiquit Bullet installed and use it a lot in Italy and Greece, either in marinas or at anchorages. If there is no signal, we use a mobile wifi dongle from Huawei and purchase a prepaid SIM card for each new country we go to. The dongle is also useful, if you are traveling around and the family decides to waste an hour or so surfing the net.
