Several models out there for under $300. that have dvd players. I wonder how much juice they draw vs a laptop?

Thanks for letting me know. I should've Googled it first. These days it seems anything electronic that you can imagine either already exists, or will shortly.

Okay, so I'm imagining a waterproof, daylight viewable tablet, with 4G cellular, satellite phone capability, GPS, and OpenCPN . . .

When you find it let me know where it is so I can buy one also.

I've seen led models for that, and I would say lower than a laptop by far. That power supply gets wicked hot.

RAM? Your using an SD card right?
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has 32 GB of RAM running Android Honeycomb. No 3G or 4G - only WiFi. Lighter than an IPad 2 and a shade thinner. Currently there is no SD card slot but they say it's coming as a dongle add on. It could be nice on the boat but I have yet to try out the display under the dodger. EarthNC could do well with an HD version as the app has just almost the minimal features to make it a great tool. for a tablet.

Re: Android App Called EarthNC (Nav Charts)

I have EarthNC Lite on my Samsung Android. The display is small, given it is a phone after all. But it is quite sufficient for making clear where I am and orienting me in low or zero viz situations. It has been useful coming into tributaries of the bay where there are winding channels. Here on the Chesapeake there is cell coverage in most areas so I can load tiles as needed. I will probably spring for the paid version.

Given the traffic around here I also love the Marine Traffic AIS app. It not only gives vessel name but details such as make, registry, speed capability, call sign, speed & course, much more - even photo's. Did I mention it is free?

I also love the various apps for weather radar.

Another cool app

BlueNMEA
This app will allow you to use your gps on your phone with your pc. It world well with SeaClear, which btw is a free chartplotter.

Re: Android App Called EarthNC (Nav Charts)

If you buy it (ten bucks) you can also use it without a cell signal, you just have to download the maps first. Probably the same way Navionics works.

Those asking about OpenCPN have you checked out Active Captain? Free software, but is android compatible unlike OpenCPN.

So there is no Navionics version for Android? Does Navionics cover more than just US waters?

There is a avionics for android that cover by the looks of it most if not al, of the world. Total cost of all still appears cheaper than a plotter. Probably all told $425 as a rough estimate.

Navionics app is awesome., not sure how ya came up with the $425.00, it was. Only $9.99 for the west coast USA, all the way to Hawaii. No cell coverage required. Luv it

Re: Android App Called EarthNC (Nav Charts)

All told, these smart phones might just do away with specific purpose devices.
BlueNMEA -App for using cell as bluetooth gps rx for use with...

BlueNMEA

Apps such as Active Captain. Great chartplotter, with lots of other options. (autopilot, radar).
Try it free before you buy.
