Alpha network adapter

I'm trying to buy an AWUSO36H. I notice some pictures of it show a double usb cable and some a single cable. Are there different versions of the same model number, or can it work with a single or a double cable?

If you can point me to someone that has one to sell I would appreciate it immensely.

Thanks,
Joe

A google search for alfa awus036h, rather than 'alpha' will get you several suppliers. It uses 2 usb cables, but may work at lower power with one--I never tried it that way. Get the longer optional antenna for higher gain.

Not sure which exact model of Alpha adaptor that we have - it is a 500mw model.
Typically when they have two cables, it is so that you can plug in both cables when there is not enough current available from one USB port to correctly run the device.
This is common with many external 2.5" hard drives also.
I will mention that I am very happy with our Alpha adaptor and as Donradcliffe says, the high gain antenna can be helpful.

Joe,

Here is a link to a thread that has been on this forum for about the last month .... should answer a lot of your questions?

Long-Distance WiFi Device

The Alpha has 2 usb plugs , mine works fine with an active extension cable and a usb hub.

Good Luck, Bill A.

This is where I got mine - and very pleased I am with it.

500mw USB WiFi ALFA AWUSO36H + 1 x 9dbi RPSMA antenna on eBid.net United Kingdom

Typically seems to give a range of up to 500 metres or so when in marina or anchored off. Always managed to find a network to connect to.

The instruction sheet with my Alfa said the two plugs were only for use if your computer is not equipped with USB2. So if you have USB 1 or 1.1 you need to plug in both plugs, with USB2 it works fine with one plug.

Thanks for all the help. Since posting, I have found only one used Alpha adapter. It was on Craigslist. But of course the wanted price was more than a new one. I have learned that while sold as a 500mW it is actually a 480mw. No big deal. The new one, just out, is an "n" model rated as 450mW,(AWUSO50H), but is supposed to be more sensitive. Alfa Wireless-N 500mW 802.11n USB Wireless Adapter AWUS050NH is where I found it. They seem to be very straightfoward and helpful. Another store is Data Alliance.
Thanks,
Joe
