AIS_ins and outs

I just purhased and installed a new VHF with AIS. However, Icom says it will not communicate with the Raymarine chartplotter E classic series that's on my boat, unless there's NMEA 2000. Raymarine E180 does not have NMEA 2000.

Do you know if the Icom (M506) with its AIS can still display the AIS information without being connected to the chartplotter?

And, if so, what are the steps to be taken for that to happen?

Thank you, all.

Re: AIS_ins and outs

either return it for a standard hozion radio. they are the only ones that do ais over nmea 183.

or buy a 183 to nmea 2000 converter like actisense. you'll also need a n2k starter kit.

the converter is probably almost as much as the radio. so option 1 is best.

Thank you.

Is "actisense" the name of a product?

Do you know if the AIS-radio (Icom M506) can still display AIS information w/o being connected to the Raymarine plottter?

One of the soft keys on the radio (just below the screen) should say “AIS”. The screen is only small, so it worth making the effort to link it to the chartplotter, rather than just using the radio, but will display the targets.

Re: AIS_ins and outs

The Icom AIS display looks pretty poor compared to a proper MFD display or OCPN.

Half of the point of the AIS is having a handy and easy-to-view overview of other boats in your neighbourhood. If you have to squint at a sub-par display it's not really doing its job properly!

My point is compromising on the on-vhf display is a bad decision - get it right.

probably but it would need gps pos info. coming from the plotter via 4800 baud nmea 183.

every DSC radio should be hooked up to gps anyways. you also need to get an MMSI number for it.

you'll likly find it useless, get it working on your screen.

here is the converter, you need the NGW-1-ISO-AIS
