AIS with OpenCPN

Has anyone used one of the cheaper entry level AIS/VHF combos like Standard Horizon's Matrix along with their OpenCPN. I'm not sure if all of the units have a NMEA port out and then you'd obviously need some sort of multiplexer.

Just imagining it would work our cheaper than a dedicated AIS receiver with Chart plotter.

Re: AIS with OpenCPN

Hi Aussie,
I get good results with a Nauticast AIS Receiver which has both NMEA out and usb which makes connecting to OpenCPN a breeze. As an added benefit it also has NMEA in so it works as a multiplexer. Available from Whitworths at the moment for about $150.00 which would be a lot cheaper than buying a combo unit. Of course you would have to add the expense of another antenna or a splitter to that.
I used to be undecided but now I'm not so sure.
