AIS trouble. OpenCPN, rx100, Ubuntu

Hello!

Firstly, I am helping my father and do not have a strong grasp of the terminology or technology at work here, so forgive me if I seem ignorant.

Ok, my father is trying to get his AIS setup working. The equipment consists of an Advansea RX-100 that is connected via USB to a computer running Ubuntu 12.04 and viewing the AIS input via OpenCPN. The problem is that the computer doesn't seem to register any input from the RX-100. He just installed Ubuntu and used to do this in Windows and ShipPlotter, so it is not a new error, it has never worked.

The FTDI driver came pre-installed, so the computer should be simulating a serial port from the USB input. a simple lsusb tells us that there is a FTDI decive connected. Minicom does not register any input and openCPN does not find any dataports.

So, does anybody have a similar setup and know a thing or two about how such a setup should be constructed? Any thoughts are very welcome.

Regards
Oskar

Re: AIS trouble. OpenCPN, rx100, Ubuntu

Hello again!

The problem is solved!

for users with the same problems who find this thread in the future:
After a lot of troubleshooting in the terminal we discovered the error.
In newer versions of Ubuntu, the user does not have permissions for the dialout by default.
By editing the file /etc/groups, adding the username after the string containing "dialout" followed by a quick log in/log out to reload the files tied to the user, this problem is corrected.
