Now I wonder if there is a gizmo to have your AIS and autopilot communicate and both ships' autopilots would adjust course without human intervention?

I have not seen one. But I can imagine one. Probably either available or just behind the corner.

I have read about and AP talking to captive winches, so that sails self trim.

Next step auto collision avoidance perhaps.

Perhaps, but by what I've read on another thread here my guess would be to have your very own dronebotboat! Just sit in the lazyboy with your remote control and fpv goggles, all the latest bells and whistles installed aboard, wee cameras and all. The sea will be littered with little craft! Get ready, it's coming. Does anyone remember the game ranch in Texas with live video stream to your house, with control of a live rifle with remote trigger. They set them up at feed stations and then the "hunter" makes his "kill" from home, the meat get's processed and shipped to your door. pathetic but that's the way of the world now, instant gratification. With all the youtube videos and now the dronesboat's coming, someone will do it.

Great idea - adjust straight into that that obstruction that isn't broadcasting an AIS signal.

Probably it could be done now but would involve years of infrastructure improvements.
