Unfortunately not... I have only seen this feature with Yacht-AIS software.

Re: AIS frenzy

Yup, That was the start of the Annapolis - Newport race with boats up to 100ft (30m). I believe this was a requirement. For local races you would not see this.

I suspect there will be software to filter/prioritise the smaller vs larger vessels much like the contours on a plotter soon. The panama example was much more relevant but covered a much larger area.

Re: AIS Frenzy

Most of those boats were spectators as I watched them peel off and head back up the Severn river after the start of the race. There was no requirement for race participants to carry AIS however they did carry the yellowbrick tracking devices that were provided by the race organizers.

Re: AIS Frenzy

Yes, Fairbank56 they had the "Brick" . It is fun to watch the progress as several of the big boats finished as some barley made it out of trhe bay and with hundreds of miles to go.

I have attached a shot of the same area today. Clearly there was a cluster for the race but normaly it is not an issue. Many were comercial charter boats. There is still lots of room out there. I hope the benifits will outweigh the issues as this system becomes more prevelent.

It's not just Yacht-wise. Our Raymarine allows us to set up a danger zone of our choice, it doesn't display in red but let's us know when a target enters the zone. So we can limit the number of targets we see to the ones that might hit us.

Yes, every plotter can do that, but that is not what you see in my photo...

Yacht-AIS shows a dynamic red zone on the AIS screen which changes shape as time passes. What it means is that if you sail into that area, you will experience a collision or near-collision event.

So basically, as long as you keep steering around the red zones, nobody is gonna hit you.

This is way more advanced than guard-zones...

ciao!

Re: AIS Frenzy

If you are looking for a reasonably priced receive only unit Defender has the ICOM MX-5000 for $334 with a $100 rebate. It has a built in antenna splitter so you can utilize your current vhf radio antenna.
