Affordable Audio System w/ iPad & iPhone connectivity

Hey there,

Erika and I are installing Polk Audio outdoor Atrium 4 speakers on the interior and want a fairly good quality receiver/audio deck (video or alt inputs would be a benefit too).

Not sure how we're going to wire up the cockpit speakers yet (in dodger, in cockpit area, on stanchions etc), so well keep that for a separate day - tho a 6 channel receiver would be preferred to allow expansion.

Any advice is MUCH appreciated!

Well, if you want Video, multiple zones and iphone/ipod (MAYBE iPad via usb???) the Simrad Sonic hub is a pretty cool unit. It's relatively cheap too, $350 (not counting the $1500 display needed to control it)

But if you are at all considering a new plotter, that's the one

On a recent charter, when we had trouble with both the stereo USB input and the chart plotter, we went straight to the iPad. I would recommend a iPad connection to the helm along with several mounting pieces from Ram-Mount to attach the iPad to the binnacle for an all-in-one chart plotter and music selection system right at the helm.

Alpine makes a bluetooth receiver that you simply play your iPod/iPad through - no wires or connectors and all the control is through itunes running on the device in your hands.

Others probably make the same thing.

Thanks for the input everyone - the Alpine options look nice, but very "auto" inspired (just my opinion). The Weezy looks interesting and could work, just worried about the marine environmental impact on the device.

Here are some of our initial thoughts:
  • Marine Receiver - Clarion CMS1 Source Commander with USB Port
    • Main Salon Speakers: Polk Audio Atrium 4 (4x, Black)
    • Cockpit Speakers: Yamaha NS-AW150W (2x, White)
  • IMHO - a must have is also SIRIUS too
Will get back to everyone on the progress - any experience with the above let us know.
