Adding High Power wifi to goFree Router

Hello all,

I'm looking for a simple way to add a high powered wifi device that can pick up long distance signals and then use my goFree router to share this connection around the boat.

Alternatively is there an all in one device out there that can..

1. Create a local hotspot.
2. Includes high gain wifi.
3. Can also take a cellular SIM card and allow the created hotspot to share this?

Regards,
Simon

For wifi I'd buy a wirieap:

http://www.thewirie.com/marine-wifi-product-AP.html

Which is a weather proof all in one wifi only device that takes 12v power. But if you want to DIY it is made up of these 2 components (which are designed to work together):

http://www.amazon.com/Alfa-R36-Repea...words=alfa+r36

http://www.amazon.com/ALFA-Network-A...xp_grid_pt_0_0

Or you can get a ubiquity bullet and an external antenna and connect it via Ethernet to your existing router:

http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-BULLE...eywords=Bullet

For wireless 4G LTE I don't think you can beat http://millenicom.com/ which gives you 20GB/mo of verizon LTE for $89.99/mo.

www.activecaptain.com is doing a series of writeups on these very issues these past few and next few weeks.

Currently around Europe / Med.

I guess my ideal setup would be long range wifi + some kind of cellular in a portable device.

Be aware that the hidden node problem can cause serious throughput problems in long distance wifi. If your close enough to use a standard wifi antenna fine. Further out , not so clear cut

Re: Adding High Power wifi to goFree Router

I'm not aware of any all in one device. The alfa r36 that I posted a link to above can take certain USB 3g devices but I think you're probably better off just looking for a good WiFi device and a good mifi device. The millenicom I posted a link to is US so wont help in the med.
